What plating means on these pieces
The maker states 14K or 18K for the plating on each piece. That figure describes the surface layer, not the metal underneath, and a plated piece is not a solid gold piece at a lower price. It is a different object with a different service life.
On a bracelet the layer goes first where the disc turns against the chain and where the clasp closes. On a necklace it goes at the back, under the hair, where the chain folds over itself. Both are places you rarely look at, and that is what makes plating seem to fail suddenly.
Habits that shorten it
Water is survivable. Chlorine, salt water, perfume sprayed onto the piece and hand cream worked into the chain are not, and the common thread is that all four sit on the surface and keep working on it. Taking a piece off before a shower and putting it on last when you dress covers most of it.
Skin and nickel
Plated jewellery sits against skin all day, and the metal under the plating is where reactions start. The maker calls these pieces nickel free, which is a claim about their material rather than a test we hold, so it is worth knowing what a reaction looks like if it happens. A clinic describes it plainly:
“Nickel allergy is an immune system reaction to nickel that usually causes an itchy rash where the metal comes in contact with the skin.”
